U-20 WC: Nigeria defeat stubborn Dominican Republic in group D opener

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles on Sunday evening defeated a stubborn Dominican Republic U-20 team in their Group D opener at the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Argentina.

Ladan Bosso tutored Flying Eagles battled to a 2-1 win over the debutants Dominican Republic to get their world Cup campaign off to a winning start.

Nigeria did control the opening exchanges but failed to create goalscoring opportunities. Things became harder for the U-20 Eagles when the minnows took the lead against the run of play in the 23rd minute.

Inter Miami midfielder Edison Azcona sent Chijioke Aniagboso the wrong way from the penalty spot after a VAR influenced penalty call at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza.

The goal sparked immediate reaction from the Nigerian boys who piled pressure on the opposition defenders enough to see Guillermo De Pena head past his own goalkeeper for the equalizer.

Nigeria did press for a winner early in the second half but were denied by the opposition goalkeeper.

In the 70th minute, the Flying Eagles finally got a goal of their own to lead in the game. Samson Lawal capitalised on a defensive error to score past the goalkeeper.

Nigeria dominated the closing minutes of the match, with the Dominican goalkeeper the reason the Flying Eagles did not score more goals.

It finished Nigeria 2-1 Dominican Republic. A morale boosting win for Nigeria ahead of the second game vs Italy on May 24.

In a statement, the club said: ‘We have parted ways with professional football player Emirhan Delibas by mutual agreement. We wish him success in his future career.’

Though the official reasoning behind the decision was not confirmed, it is likely to have been connected to Delibas’ alleged profile on dating app Bumble.

On his page, a photo of Delibas wearing Besiktas’ training kit and holding a drink was accompanied by his name and age, though the number falsely claimed he is 24.

His description told matchers that he was a footballer for the club, provided his Instagram handle and revealed that he was looking for ‘something casual’.

In a twist, however, the player has looked to distance himself from the profile.

In a statement on Instagram, he said: ‘I reject the slanders made by fake accounts and would like to state that my loyalty to my team cannot be questioned.

‘Besiktas is a responsibility for me. Your love has been my greatest motivation.’

2023 FIFA Women World Cup: Super Falcons Squad Numbers Unveiled

With the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup opening games scheduled for this Thursday, the shirt numbers of Nigeria’s Super Falcons were revealed earlier today with most players retaining their traditional Jersey numbers

In the goalkeeping area, first choice goalkeeper, retained her Jersey Number 16 whilst Balogun and Oluehi opted for Jersey Number 23 and 1 respectively.

Barcelona Feminine’ upfront, Asisat Oshala retained her number 8 with the number 9 shirt handed to Desire Oparanozie and Athletico Madrid Feminine Rashedaat Ajibade taking her trade mark Jersey Number 15.

At the backline, old war horse Onome Ebi and her center back pair,Plumptre retained their Jersey number 2 and 5. In the middle of the park, Ucheibe and Monday gift went for Jersey number 10 and 11.

In the Forward line; Ordega and Kanu will put on jersey number 12 and 17 respectively. Highly rated Payne and Echegini will wear 7 and 19.

The Super Eagles will start their campaign at the 2023 Women World Cup against Canada on July 21st.

Nigeria will then face Australia on July, 27th before the final group game versus Republic of Ireland on July 31st.
