Three (3) Things Rohr Must Fix If Nigeria Are To Beat Cape Verde

The Nigeria Super Eagles will continue it’s journey to book a place in the Qatar 2022 World Cup African Play-offs as the team square up against the ‘Blue Sharks’ of Cape Verde tomorrow at the Telsim Balogun Stadium.

The Nigeria Senior National team on Sunday evening touched down Nigeria on board a charted flight after a well fought battle against the ‘Lone Stars’of Liberia in Morroco.

Prior to the reverse fixture in Nigeria tomorrow, the Nigerian Super Eagles claimed a (2-1) win against the ‘Blue Sharks’ before their own fans, all thanks to goals from Victor Osimhen and an own goal from Cape Verde defender, Rochas Santos.

Following the results after Matchday 5, the Super Eagles of Nigeria needs only a draw in the fixture against the Cape Verde side for the team to book a place in the African Qatar 2022 Play-offs.

All eyes will be on Rohr and his Super Eagles team on Tuesday when they square up against the ‘Blue Sharks’ of Cape Verde in Nigeria, these are three (3) key things Coach Gernot Rohr must get right if the team wishes to seal it’s qualification for the play-offs after 90 minutes.

1. Quivering central defence
With the 3-5-2 formation implored by the Super Eagles gaffer and the personnel’s deployed, the team were lucky to keep a clean sheet against Liberia as the central defence of the Super Eagles was wobbly for the whole of 90 minutes.

In recent times the ‘Oyinbo Wall’ pair of William Ekong and Leon Balogun have failed to live up to expectation by not being able to keep a solid cover for the goalkeeper since the beginning of the qualifier and this will be a channel mobile Cape Verde team might explore to spoil the Eagles party on Tuesday in Lagos.

As a thing of major concern, Gernot Rohr needs to work out something fast to ensure the central defence is solid to avoid a mistake that will hurt the team, to bring this under control, the gaffer should do well to try out a different pair in the heart of the Eagles backline.

With the duo Kenneth Omeruo, Shehu Abdullahi and Chidozie Awaziem, in the Eagles team, Rohr should try take

risk to try something new against the Predictable backline he always presents.

2. Functional Midfield Partnership
Since the departure of legendary, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, the Super Eagles team is yet to have a Midfielder who can offer what the former Bolton midfielder brought into the Super Eagles team during his active days with the Nigeria National team.

On many occasions, the Super Eagles gaffer has tried out different pairs in the middle of the park but none has been productivity which is one problem of the National team and something should be done if the team are yet to beat Cape Verde.

Nevertheless, final balls through to the attackers from the middle of the park was a problem throughout the match against, Liberia, as Alex Iwobi miscued almost all his decisive passes to the opponent or put in a wrong foot which made goal scoring a bit difficult for the strikers..

Nigeria Senior National team coach, Gernot Rohr must continue to work on the engine room and ensure they can locate the strikers with the passes that matters and Nigeria will beat Cape Verde on Tuesday in Lagos.

3. Dead Balls
The conversion rate of the Super Eagles when it comes to dead balls is awfully low as 99% of the team goals in the qualifier came through open play despite the number of free kicks and corner kicks the team do get especially when playing at home.

In the game of football, every game is different from another and there are bad days that goals might not come through open play and in such occasions, they team will be left with no other option than to resort to hurt the opponent’s through Dead balls.

With this in mind, the coach must find a way to ensure corners kicks and free kicks in dangerous areas are converted to goals on Tuesday when the Super Eagles host Cape Verde in Lagos so that everyone can jubilate and celebrate after the 90 minutes on Tuesday.
