Super Sub! Desire Oparanozie Shows Off Class To Score In Nigeria Super Falcons Big Win

Published

Nigeria’s Super Falcons continued with their impressive run of form as they claimed a second win in the space of a week to end their international engagements on a high. The African giants defeated FIFA World Cup co-hosts New Zealand 3-0 in Antalya to claim their third win on the bounce.

After a wretched run of form, the Super Falcons claimed wins over Costa Rica And Haiti in their last two internationals before squaring up against New Zealand’s Ferns. Their opponents are co-hosting the World Cup alongside Australia in 100 days’ time, and the match was going to be a good test for both teams.

New Zealand looked to lay down an early marker as they peppered the Falcons goal in the hope of finding an opening. Paris FC goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was, however, in the mood to repel their attacks alongside other members of the rearguard.

After 33 minutes, the Super Falcons captain stepped up to score the opener for them. A corner from Toni Payne was met by the head of 40-year-old central defender Onome Ebi to give Nigeria the lead in the game.

New Zealand continued to push for an equaliser but were unable to breach the Nigerian backline until half-time.

Four minutes into the second half, the Super Falcons doubled their advantage with a goal made in the USA. Michelle Alozie found the run of Jennifer Echegini in the box, and the defender had the easy task of tapping the ball into the back of the net for her first international goal.

Former captain Desire Oparanozie was introduced in place of Esther Okoronkwo in the 50th minute for her second substitute appearance. The China-based striker duly rounded off the scoring in added time with a fine finish after holding off an opponent.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have now ended this international window in Turkey with two wins from two, five goals scored and one conceded. The results will be a huge confidence booster going into the FIFA Women’s World Cup in June.

Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has arrived in Nigeria ahead of the crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic.

Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has arrived in Uyo ahead of the crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin Republic.

The 25-year-old striker touched down in Uyo on Thursday aboard Ibom Air by 4:45pm, after arriving in Nigeria earlier in the day. Osimhen is set to train with the rest of the national team this evening as they prepare for the all-important match.

Osimhen’s arrival comes just days after he completed a season-long loan move from Napoli to Turkish champions Galatasaray, ending a summer filled with transfer speculation. Throughout the window, the Nigerian forward was linked with top European clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Chelsea, and Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli. However, Napoli turned down the offers, leading to his eventual transfer to Galatasaray after the main European transfer window had closed.

A potential move to Chelsea was particularly close, but the deal fell through after Osimhen reportedly rejected the wage package offered by the Premier League club. Galatasaray acted quickly to secure his services, bringing him in on loan in the final days of the transfer window.

Osimhen’s participation in the AFCON qualifiers had been delayed as he finalised his move to Turkey. According to reports, the forward communicated with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles Technical Director Augustine Eguavoen, who granted him permission to complete his transfer before joining the team.

Now in Uyo, Osimhen’s presence will be a significant boost for the Super Eagles, who are preparing to face Benin Republic on Saturday. As the reigning African Player of the Year, Osimhen is expected to lead Nigeria’s attack, hoping to continue his outstanding form on the international stage.

With the Super Eagles aiming to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON, Osimhen’s return to the squad will no doubt increase the team’s confidence ahead of the qualifiers.
