NPFL22: Nigeria Professional Football League Matchday One Preview

After months of wait, Nigeria topflight league will in no distant time return for it’s 2022/2023 season with all Matchday 1 billed for January 8, 2023.

End of the 2022 season birthed new company who would be saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the smooth running of the league when the 2022/2023 gets underway.

Following the AGM held today, the IMC against all odds scheduled the 2022/2023 season in an Abridge format of ten teams in two different groups.

With the grouping and drawing of fixtures, below is a general review of Matchday 1 of the Nigeria professional football league season slated to kick off, January 8 across different approved Stadias.

1. Nasarawa Vs Enyimba
Grouped along in Group A, Lafia based side will be faced with an uphill task on it’s Matchday one game haven been drawn to face 7th time NPFL Champions at home.

The people’s elephant who missed out in continental football last campaign will look forward to get it right from Day one when they lock horns with the Solid Miners.

2. Akwa United Vs Bendel Insurance
Former NPFL Champions, Akwa United who fell into Group A will be faced with a tricky fixture at home on Matchday (1) against new boys, Bendel Insurance.

Newly promoted, Bendel Insurance side will however hope to make big statement when they face Uyo based side on Matchday 1.

3. Plateau United Vs Shootings Stars
Jos based side who fell into Group A will start off campaign in the new season with a date with Traditional side, Shooting Stars at home whilst Ibadan based side who missed out from relegation will hope to get it right from the blast of the kick-off whistle.

4. Kwara United Vs Gombe United
The tricky is believed to be one of the stars matches on Matchday one in Group A.

The possession based sides are tipped to thrill the fans with good football.

5. Remo Stars Vs El Kanemi Warriors
The Sky blue stars who made huge statement last time out and grabbed a continental slot will hope to do more in the new season when they play host to newly promoted, El Kanemi Warriors side on Matchday 1.

Newly promoted, El Kanemi Warriors will hope to stay afloat in the league starting from Matchday regardless drawn alongside top teams in Group A.

6. Bayelsa United Vs Dakada FC
In Group B, Newly promoted Bayelsa United Will be faced with an acid test on Monday 1 when they kick off their campaign in the topflight league with Uyo based side, Dakada.

Dakada who missed out from being relegated last season will hope to get it right from Day one.

7. Wikki Tourist Vs Niger Tornadoes
Merged in Group B, the exciting fixture ranks as one of the top matches when Niger Tornadoes take a trip to Bauchi.

8 Doma United Vs Sunshine Stars
Newly promoted Doma United will be faced with a tough Matchday one as they are fixed to face Sunshine Stars in their first game in the Nigeria elite league.

9. Rivers United Vs Lobi Stars
Defending Champions, Rivers United will hope to defend it’s title wholly regardless fixed to face, Lobi Stars at home on Matchday 1.

10. Rangers International Vs Abia Warriors
Rangers side will be faced with an oriental Derby on Matchday 1 in Group B when they face off against Abia Warriors Football Club at home on Matchday 1.

Official: Nigerian International Junior Lokosa Shake Hands With Remo Stars

Nigerian top-flight league side, Remo Stars Football Club have completed the signing of former Nigeria professional football league ‘Goal king’ Junior Sewanu Lokosa from Saudi Arabia based side, Al-Rayyan Club.

Born on 23 August 1993, 29-year-old Junior Sewanu Lokosa started his professional football career with defunct Nigerian based clubside, First Bank FC in 2013.

After a 7years stint with the defunct Lagos based side, First Bank FC, scoring 92 goals in 128 apperances, Junior Sewanu Lokosa moved to team up with Kano Pillars in 2018.

In Kano Pillars, Junior Sewanu Lokosa blossomed into a dreaded striker in the top-flight league and also went ahead to emerge Nigeria professional football league top scorer in 2018.

After trials in China,[7] he joined Espérance Sportive de Tunis on 14 January 2019, signing a two-and-a-half-year contract.

On July 30, 2020 the Tunisian champions Espérance Sportive de Tunis announced Lokosa’s departure on their Official Twitter and cut his contract.

On 5 August 2022, Lokosa joined Saudi Second Division side Al-Rayyan.

EKPO EMMANUEL; I CAN’T WAIT FOR START OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE LEAGUE SEASON TO COMMENCE

Kwara United Centre back, Ekpo Emmanuel and Ghanaian National has stated that he is super excited for the second half of the Nigeria Professional League season to commence.

The first half of the Nigeria Professional League Season was concluded on 22nd of February with Kwara United winning away at Elkanemi Warriors home in the last game of the league season to finish 8th on the Group A standing of the NPFL .

The team also changed Coaches with Coach Abdulazeez Mohammed making way for Coach Kabiru Dogo.

Emmanuel Ekpo when asked about the change in the technical bench and how it will affect the team going forward, the Ghanaian Centre Back had this to say “I believe the new coach has given us a new mentality, I am confident in his ability to steady the team well and i hope at the end of the season we will end in a respectable position.” He further stated that he is looking forward to the second half of the season and can’t wait for the resumption of the second half f the league season scheduled to commence on 26th of March, 2023.

Kwara United will take on El-Kanemi Warriors in a reverse fixture on March 26th

Sensational Nigerian striker, Obioma Chukwuemeka, has been voted the League Bloggers player of the month for February.
Thanks to his remarkable goal-scoring form, the Enyimba International striker has clearly been a standout performer for the ‘People’s Elephant’ in the 2022–23 season.

The Enyimba talisman scored 5 goals in the 5 domestic league games in February, including a brace against El Kanemi Warriors. And indeed, this has helped him win the prestigious player award.

In the month under review,February, Obioma Chukwuemeka has been a smoking form in the league for his team to rank as the league top scorer with (7) goals and position his team on the second position.
