Super Eagles forward, Kelechi Iheanacho has revealed that he was surprised when he discovered that English Premier League side Manchester City were keen for his signature.
Iheanacho who was an inspiring player for Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets in the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup, as the Nigerians went on to win the whole tournament, stated that he doubted if he would be able to get regular minutes of football under his belt if he joined the Manchester club and so, was not too keen on the move.
“I didn’t believe that it was going to happen”, the 26 year old told LFC when describing his feelings upon hearing that Manchester City were interested in him for his signature.
“After the under 17 World Cup, I was looking at going to other teams in Europe.
“But when they said I was going to Manchester City, I was surprised and said, ‘How can I go there to that massive team? Am I even going to play? I said that I wouldn’t go and they should take me to a smaller team.
“However my father said to me that it doesn’t matter where I go, I know how to play football and that will show through there. So, I believed in him, he blessed me and I went on to Manchester City”
The rest they say, is history, as he went on to have a good career in the club, before being sold for a reported 25 million pounds to the club he plies his trade at now, Leicester City, in August of 2017. Iheanacho featured for Man city a total of 64 times across the 2015-16 season and the 2016-17 season, scoring 21 goals in all competitions.
