Calvin Bassey Injury Scare Ahead Of Portugal Friendly

Nigerian full back Calvin Bassey may not be available for the friendly match against Portugal.


The 22 year old was down on the floor in the 41st minute of Ajax draw against FC Emmen, after landing in an awkward position. He wasn’t able to carry on in the second half, as he was replaced by Netherlands defender Daley Blind at halftime, as Ajax threw away their 2 goal lead in the game.


Calvin Bassey was among the defenders called up on Friday for the friendly on the 17th of November, but is in doubt to be available if he doesn’t recover in time. Although the extent of the injury is not certain, the absence of the defender would be much felt for the Super Eagles, as he has become an important player for the National side.


Bassey has also been very key for the dutch side as the gaffer, Alfred Schreuder, has selected him for 18 consecutive games, despite coming under fire for his performance and ball playing ability by club legends of the Amsterdam based club.

On the other hand, Saturday’s draw against Emmen extended Ajax winless run of games to three, following defeat to leaders PSV Eindhoven, before Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against Vitesse Arnhem.

Bassey did put in a good performance before coming off injured, and it was when he came off that Ajax conceded the two goals to eventually draw the match in full
Calvin Bassey will be hoping that the injury is not too severe to allow him to represent his Nation against former European Champions Portugal on Thursday.
