AFCON 2023: Player Ratings From Super Eagles’ 0-1 Win Against Ivory Coast



The Super Eagles of Nigeria have defeated the Elephant of Cote d’Ivoire 1-o to brighten their chances of qualifying for AFCON knockout stage.

William Troost-Ekong converted a penalty in the 55th minute of the game to give the Eagles the much needed win.

Troost-Ekong won the battle of wills and sent an unstoppable penalty past Yahia Fofana into middle of the goal.

Below is a rating of the Nigeria Super Eagles Starting XI based on their performances.

1. Stanley Nwabili (9/10)

Handed his second start in the competition, the Chippa United goalie showed off top class in between the sticks against Ivory Coast.

On numerous occasions he was called to action, agile Nwabili showed off top goalkeeping artistry to deny the Ivory Coast team a goal.

2. William Troost-Ekong (9/10)

Troost-Ekong marshalled the Eagles back line to another win with a clean sheet as his goal was enough to earn the team maximum points against the host Nation.

Troost-Ekong held solid at the back line as he commanded the Eagles defender expertly to earn a win.

3. Semi Ajayi (8/10)

Unlike in the first game, Ajayi showed more composure to form a formidable force with Troost-Ekong in the heart of the Super Eagles defence.

Ajayi and Troost-Ekong complimented each other which gave no room for any form of ‘School Boy’ mistake.

4. Calvin Bassey (9/10)

Unarguably the man of the match, the Fulham Utility player was drafted in following Jose Peseiro change of formation for the Ivory Coast game.

In a three-man defence, Bassey stood out with class,, gave the Ivorians back line a run for their money, winning duels and tackles to ensure the Eagles guided their second half lead.

5. Zaidu Sanusi (7/10)

Sanusi was way abover average, was exciting offensively and defensively regardless making minor mistakes in thee game.

6. Ola Aina (9/10)

Nottingham Forest defender who retained his place in the team was a beauty to behold.

Offensively Ola Aina was a menace to the opponent’s back line with his top cooperation alongside Samuel Chukwueze and defensively, Aina was literally everywhere, winning tackles and clearing any form of danger.

7. Frank Onyeka (8/10)

Unlike in the first game, Onyeka came through with a grade A performance against Ivory Coast playing from the defensive midfield position.

Frank covered much ground, made good interceptions, won most second balls to give the team the much balance from the middle of the park.

8. Alex Iwobi (8/10)

Against Ivory Coast, Iwobi was feasible everywhere in the game as him alongside Frank Onyeka played compactly to frustrate the Ivorian team with the middle of the park game plan.

9. Samuel Chukwueze (9/10)

Replacing Moses Simon in the starting XI, Chukwueze kept the opponent’s backline busy with his dashing runs and deft touches and built a good synergy alongside Ola Aina.

The AC Milan winger nearly got an assist with a defender splitting pass but his effort was blown wide by Victor Osimhen.

10. Ademola Lookman (9/10)

Also one of the best performers in the Super Eagles team Against Ivory Coast.

Lookman who was dreaded and caused more havoc in the first game was more deadily against Ivory Coast and was alive to his offensive andd defensive ditties playing from the left hand channel.

11. Victor Osimhen (9/10)

As expected, Osimhen lived up to expectations as he made his presence felt by the young Ivorian backline.

Regardless missing a clear-cut chance, the Napael Striker gifted the team a scoring opportunity with a spot kick after been hacked down in the box.

Highly rated Nigeria youngster, Yusuf Abdullahi, has been spotted in training with the Nigeria Under-20 team (Flying Eagles) as the team intensified preparations for football event in the All African Games which will take place in Ghana.

AFCON23: Nigerians Owes José Peseiro Apologies



Failure as they said has no friends whilst success comes with lots of friends and family members inclusive.

Success never comes overnight as it requires time, consistency, believing in your craft will surely draw the much needed success closer than expected.

The Nigeria Super Eagles yesterday stepped into the semi-finals of the on-going African Cup Of Nations In Abidjan, Ivory Coast following its 1-0 win over Angola, all thanks to Lookman Ademola first half goal which was enough to separate the two sides at full time.

Prior to the African Cup Of Nations, the Nigeria Super Eagles were written off by its own country people following the team strings of poor run with its Portuguese gaffer, Jose Peseiro, described as an ‘incompetent’ Coach by many Nigeria Football enthusiasts.

José Peseiro suffered all manner of insults and cyber bullying by Nigerians as well as in the hands of the Nigeria Football Federation as he was forced to take a pay but he was undeterred knowing his worth and ability.

Nigeria Super Eagles Coach, Jose Peserio, suffered all manner of negative criticism from Nigeria Football enthusiasts, Journalists and Pundits starting from its Provisional list for the AFCON down to his list of 25 players for the competition.

The Portuguese gaffer amidst all negative criticism remained focused and never allowed side talks from naysayers distract him as he knows his Onion and was ready to prove it.

“We said it, the Nigeria Super Eagles team is too big for Jose Peserio to handle, the team cannot qualify for group stages ” these were words of many Nigerians, pundits and analysts after the team 1-1 draw in its first game in Group A against Equatorial Guinea.

The team squared up against host Nation, Ivory Coast and cruised to a 1-0 win and went ahead to record a 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau to secure a place in the round of 16 but still, the Coach Jose Peserio tutored side was under fire as they described the team qualification as a fluke.

In all group stages, the Nigeria Super Eagles team conceded only once and still stretched its clean-sheet with their 2-0 win over Cameroon in the round of 16 down to its 1-0 win over Angola in the quarter-finals.

Against all odds, against all criticism by Naysayers, Coach Jose Peserio has silenced all criticism against him with success stories following the Nigeria Super Eagles qualifications for the semi-finals of the AFCON.

At this point, Nigerian football enthusiasts, Journalists, Analysts and Pundits needs to unanimously come together and tender an apology to the Nigeria Super Eagles gaffer as his big feats in the AFCON has brought smiles in the faces of millions of Nigerians who called for his sack prior to the competition.

As early stated, Success takes time and requires consistent as Jose Peserio has turned around the fortunes of the Nigeria Super Eagles team in the AFCON with its high level of consistency in formations and personnel’s.

With the team setting it’s eyes on the trophy, Portuguese gaffer, Jose Peserio deserves an apology letter from all Nigerians who doubted his ability.
